A Book of Faces (2020)
This project consists of 53, 7x5 portraits, a deck of divination cards and an accompanying guidebook. While the subjects sat for a painted portrait, each was asked what they wanted to bring into and release from their lives, and how they planned to make that happen. The paintings were printed as a deck of cards, with the sitter’s name on their card. This allows viewers to find the sitter’s page in the guidebook. There, the portrait is printed along with text, resulting from the interview, which describes the sitter’s situation and their plan of action, written in the second person, as though it is advice to the reader. This advice may be understood as a message from the universe, but it can also be a way for viewers to recognize that even a stranger, who’s life may be very different, can offer useful wisdom to the seeker.
